Water means life. Meandering through six countries, the famed Mekong is the longest river in Southeast Asia, running 4800 kilometres before emptying into the South China Sea, sustaining an abundance of plant and animal life, and serves as the main artery that sustains the livelihood of some 60 million people. Flooding is a regular occurrence and water levels can rise by 8 metres, which can dictate your route.

Aqua Expeditions has raised the bar with cruise offerings in the region, with their 40-passenger river boat, Aqua Mekong, offering 3, 4 and 7 day cruises from either Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, or from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap in Cambodia.
With contemporary chic design, and Zen-like ambiance, rooms offer floor-to-ceiling windows with day beds to better witness the pulse of river life. Some offer balconies with sliding doors and an outdoor daybed. There’s an infinity style plunge pool, movie screening room, library, fitness centre and spa, and on the upper observation deck, an outdoor bar with cabanas and lounge chairs.

The culinary aspect is a vital component where Aqua Expeditions excel, with Michelin starred chef, David Thompson who uses local ingredients of Mekong-inspired recipes. In the evening, exotic pre-dinner cocktails and appetizers in the lounge are upstaged by spectacular dinners.

Menus reveal creations to tempt even the faint hearted diner: Banana Blossom Salad with Seared Wagyu, stir-fried watercress with lime pepper perhaps, followed up with decadent deserts. Of course all on board meals are inclusive.
Additional details, such as daily laundry service, shoe cleaning, personalised aluminium water bottles which are handed out to guests prior to excursions, Wi-Fi, juices, coffee, soft drinks, beer and wine are also complimentary, as are twice daily shore excursions in small groups with local experts, experiencing cultural exchanges to remote temples and enjoy a private audience with monks, roam local markets and stilt villages and visit local craft people at work in silver smith, bronze and silk weaving villages.
